Titanium as a material

As a material titanium is well-known for its outstanding properties. These include an attractive ratio between weight and strength, its good ductility combined with high strength and rigidity, its high thermal resistance, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The use of alloying additions can further improve corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as, for example, tensile strength and creep resistance. Titanium and above all titanium alloys are thus of great importance as construction materials for the aerospace sector, for the chemical industry (tanks and containers), for medical technology (pacemakers, dental implants, hip prostheses) and also for seawater-resistant components in shipbuilding and plant construction.

We can assume that titanium materials will be readily available in the future too. Titanium is the fourth most common metal in the earth's crust. Since the 1940s it has been possible to produce titanium on a large scale by the Kroll process. A broader application of titanium materials is currently hindered by technical problems in processing which, it is hoped, will be solved as part of the project.
